Cherry Blossom Press has published Belleville and Nutley In the Civil War, a Brief History by Anthony Buccino.

The book is a compilation of information documenting the participation of the New Jersey towns of Belleville and Nutley in the American Civil War. Publication includes information on six local soldiers killed in action in the War Between the states, plus information on the battle campaigns in which they gave up their lives. Also lists information on participation in various New Jersey and other state militias by local men.

The new book is available in print and on the Kindle eReader. In paperback at $9.99

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22

dedicates Mill Street building 6/18

Members of the Belleville-Nutley Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22 voted to name their building after chapter commander Joseph T. Fornarotto. Fornarotto was instrumental in planning, fundraising, soliciting donated labor and supplies that resulted in the three-year old facility at 612 Mill Street, Belleville.

The building will be formally dedicated on Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m.

Mayor Joanne Cocchiola and the Board of Commissioners announced plans for Nutley Township's Annual Memorial Day Parade at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30.

Weather permitting, a brief opening ceremony will be held in the Nutley Park Oval at 10:45 a.m., with the parade route being the same as previous years – Chestnut Street to Passaic Avenue to Centre Street to Franklin Avenue, with a reviewing stage in front of John H. Walker Middle School.

The keynote speaker is Raymond L. Zawacki, deputy commissioner of Veterans Affairs, and the grand marshal is Rich McClintick.

The morning of the parade will begin with visits to memorials:

Active Servicemen and Women to Be Honored At Memorial Day Parade

Nutley, NJ – The Veteran’s Council and the Office of the Mayor would like to once again invite Nutley residents enrolled in the Armed Forces and their families to participate by marching in the Memorial Day Parade.

“It is such a nice way to pay tribute to these men and women, and to be sure that their selfless service to our country is always remembered,” commented Mayor Joanne Cocchiola. “This also gives our community members the perfect opportunity to thank them.”

Servicemen, servicewomen and their families are asked to contact the Mayor’s Office to confirm their participation. Names will also be collected for the Memorial Day Parade Commemorative Service Banner, which features names of community members who are actively serving in the Armed Forces.

There are currently 35 names of active servicemen and servicewomen on the banner, which is hanging on the Oval fence by Town Hall, off of Chestnut Street.

The Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 31st with opening ceremonies commencing at 11am in the Nutley Park Oval. This year’s parade will boast active marching bands, dance troops and army vehicles.

In addition, children and adults alike will be invited to participate in a patriotic bicycle parade. Bicycle parade information will be distributed through local public schools and pre-schools.

PACIFIC: Corp. Latham Wounded

(March 16, 1945) – Cpl. Robert H. Latham of the 4th Division, U.S. Marine Corps. has written his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arch A. Latham of 511 Centre street under the date of Feb. 27, that he was wounded at Iwo Jima and is now in an Army hospital out of the combat area. He told his parents that he could not tell them of the extent of his wounds but he did say that he and his fellow Marines were getting the best of care.

Cpl. Latham had previously taken part in the invasions of Roi and Namur in the Marshall Islands, also Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas and had come through without a scratch, although in the thick of battle throughout.

He was graduated from Nutley High school in February 1941 and enlisted in the Marines in September 1942.

(April 11, 1945) – A Japanese mortar shell which landed in his foxhole on Iwo Jima terminated 15 months of fighting in the Pacific for Marine Corp. Robert Latham, 23, now on his way with 180 other casualties from a U.S. Naval hospital in California to a hospital in Philadelphia for convalescence.

Latham was in charge of an ammunition detail with a machine gun platoon and had been on Iwo two days when he was so seriously wounded that it necessitated his foot being amputated while in a shell hole by a medical corpsman.

During his ordeal, his parents learned, Cpl. Latham lighted and passed out cigarettes to other Marines who had also been wounded. Later at a hospital on Saipan where his left leg was amputated, he met the same medical corpsman, wounded at a later date, who said that it was Cpl. Latham’s composure which had enabled him to perform the operation without cracking up himself.

PACIFIC: Vincent Fields

(April 6, 1945) - Pvt. Vincent Fields, 23, was reported killed in action at Iwo Jima.

Mrs. Fields, the former June Parr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Parr of Carteret place, was advised that her husband was reported killed March 6. He was a member of the 4th Marine Division.

Pvt. Fields is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Fields of Long Valley.
The couple was married May 29, 1942, in Vincent Methodist Church here.

He had been in service since last August and went overseas the middle of last November. Before he left this country, Mrs. Fields and their 19-month-old daughter spent three weeks with him in North Carolina.

Since her husband has been overseas, Mrs. Fields has been spending part of the time with his parents at Long Valley, but she was at her parents' for Easter when she received the report of his death.

Pvt. Fields attended Long Valley schools and was graduated from Hackettstown High school. He was employed by Wright Aeronautical company in Paterson before entering service.

The couple was married May 29, 1942, in Vincent Methodist Church here.

(April 6, 1945) - Mr. and Mrs. Arthur T. Abbott of 32 Chestnut Street, the parents of Pfc. Arthur T. Abbott Jr., 24, were informed last week the Marine had been reported killed in action at Iwo Jima on March 4.

He attended Nutley High school and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.

His wife is the former Shirley Slater of Montclair, and their two-year-old son Arthur 3rd. He has one brother, Robert, a student at Nutley High school, and a sister Mrs. Frederick Heany of Nutley.

PACIFIC: Foti Survives Sinking of USS Luce, Sharks

(July 13, 1945) – Aboard the destroyer USS Luce, which was sunk on the morning of May 4 when 27 Jap suicide planes attacked during the battle of Okinawa, Machinist’s Mate 3/c John Foti of 15 Duncan Place, who has just completed survivor leave lived a lifetime of nightmares in the one minute and ten seconds it took to sink the ship.
Foti was in the engine room when General Quarters sounded.

He started top side and was just coming out of the engine room hatch when the first suicide plane hit the ship. The explosion knocked him down the ladder but he escaped with only minor bruises.

Getting up, Foti tried to run to side again to man the gun, but he never made it.
“Everything happened so fast,” exclaimed Foti, “the planes were pealing off one after another at about 400 or 450 miles per hour.”

As Foti was running up the port side of the ship where the planes were attacking, the Luce received another hit back aft and was listing to the starboard.

Foti made his way to the starboard to get under cover from shrapnel as well as from the explosions of the ship’s ammunition.

But he no sooner arrived at his supposed haven of safety when the starboard took a direct hit.

Foti was blown down on the deck, face flat. Fourteen other men who were taking cover with him were killed instantly.

“Yes,” said Foti, I saw my buddies blown to bits and it certainly was a horrible mess.”

There wasn’t any time to stop and think then because the ship was listing so badly it was getting impossible to lie on the deck. To avoid falling over, Foti grabbed the rail and made his way toward the bridge. Many men who had gone over starboard were killed when the ship rolled on them.

Starboard and aft were now sinking fast. When Foti arrived at the bridge, another plane came in causing a terrible explosion. This was the third suicide plane to crash the ship in addition to one torpedo.

Badly bruised but with no serious injuries, Foti got up and with no helmet or life jacket climbed hand over hand to the port side where he could abandon ship. The “Skipper” was on the bridge and doing what he could to direct the men to the safest part of the ship.

From where Foti stood waiting to jump form the sinking destroyer, he could see the men already in the water being attacked by sharks and strafed by enemy planes. About this time, friendly aircraft came to the aid of the stricken vessel.

The ship was now at such an angle that Fote was standing on her side. Another explosion occurred and blew a torn life jacket within ten feet of him. Realizing that he had to act against time, he grabbed the jacket and jumped.

“Making a ten foot leap into the air, Foti hit the keel of the ship as she rolled over. Landing on his back, he slid from the slipper keel into the water. The destroyer was still underway and continued going on.

Unable to swim and with only a battered life jacket for security, Foti was now faced with a triple threat: drowning, enemy planes, and sharks.

Our planes were intercepting the Japs, and as a precaution against the sharks Foti rolled over and over in fuel oil til he was completely covered. “It burned my eyes so, I thought they’d pop out,” he remarked.

“A wounded ship-mate of mine held me up and I tried to hold on to him. We stayed in the water over an hour just hanging on to each other like that.”

A small American patrol ship came to the rescue and picked the survivors up. Foti and the men were then taken aboard a hospital ship where they received immediate care.

Foti said, “The Luce was an accurate ship, and until the day of the sinking she never received an enemy scratch even though we saw action in every engagement of the Philippines, the first two raids on the Nip homeland and in numerous attacks on Jap shipping.

Speaking of his experiences the day the destroyer was sunk, Foti said, “It was the most disastrous thing I ever went through. I never want to go through it again. The good Lord was with me but our losses were heavy.

“On a ship that small it’s tough because the men were very close. We knew all about each other’s families and girl friends – it was almost like seeing your own brother die.”

PACIFIC: Thurston Woodford

(Jan. 19, 1945) -- Seaman First-Class Thurston Fuller Woodford, son of C. Thurston Woodford of Verona, formerly of Nutley, was reported missing Nov. 10, 1944, after the explosion of the munitions ship, USS Mount Hood at its base in the South Pacific, on which he served.

Seaman Woodford is included in the Navy’s official casualty list released today.

His family received word from the Navy department on last Nov. 30 and it was confirmed after Christmas.

The 19-year-old member of the U.S. naval reserve last sent a letter written on Nov. 4 saying that the ship was waiting to discharge its cargo.

Woodford trained at Newport, R.I., and Norfolk, Va., going on active duty last Aug. 20.

His family last saw him in August when he was home on a five-day leave.

He was graduated with honors from Montclair Academy last June, where he was editor of the yearbook, a member of the tennis team, Forum and Red and Black, an honorary society. He has a brother William, M. a student at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

Woodford is listed on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.

PACIFIC: Herbert Washburne

(August 6, 1943) -- Seaman Second Class Herbert R. Washburne, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Washburne of 23 Orchard street, was killed in action aboard the U.S.S. Juneau, along with the five Sullivan brothers, during the Guadalcanal invasion on Nov. 13, 1942.

He was a radio technician and had been reported missing on Jan. 15.

Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Pvt. John A. Washburne, who is with the Army Air Forces in North Africa.

PACIFIC: Thomas Smith

(Dec. 7, 1945) -- While en route to the United States aboard the battle cruiser Guam, S 1/c Thomas Edward Smith, 19, son of Mrs. Alice Smith Van Dyne of Freeman place, was killed in a fall Nov. 30, according to a telegram received Tuesday by his mother.

Besides his mother, he leaves his step-father Gene Van Dyne, two brothers S 1/c Richard, and Harry, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Boyd.

PACIFIC: Sgt. Thomas Maxham

(Jan. 12, 1945) – T-Sgt. Thomas J. Maxham was killed in a B-29 plane crash on take-off at Dudhkundi, India, on Dec. 24, 1944, according to a War Department telegram received Dec. 30.

Maxham, nephew of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Rhodes of Chase Street, with whom he lived for a long while, was a radar operator on a B-29.

With the first B-29 raiders on Japan, June 15, Sgt. Maxham participated in other raids on Japan, and held the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster.

He went overseas in April, and before entering service in March 1942, was employed at the General Instrument company, Elizabeth.

He had previously attended Nutley High School and had worked at the Charms Candy Company, Bloomfield.

A High Mass was held for him at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
His father, James J. Maxham resides at Woodhaven, N.Y.

PACIFIC: Ens. William Louden

(Feb. 1, 1946) -- Ensign William Louden, reported missing in action since Nov. 13, 1944, is now officially listed as dead.

Ensign Louden was on a bombing strike when the torpedo bomber he piloted crashed in Cavite Harbor in the Philippines. He was attached to the Carrier Monterez.

Louden went through the local schools, graduating from Nutley High school.

He is survived by his mother Mrs. Flora C. Bornemann of Garden place, and a brother, Sgt. Henry C. Louden.

PACIFIC: Emil Liloia

April 13, 1945) - Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Vito Frank Liloia of Passaic avenue that their son, Pfc. Emil M. Liloia, 21, USMC, was killed in action March 1 on Iwo Jima while serving with the 3rd Marine division.

Born in Belleville, Pfc. Liloia came to Nutley when he was three. He went through Nutley schools and while in high school starred on the football team. He was voted the best athlete of the year.

He received a scholarship to Temple University in Philadelphia and had played there only one year when he went into service.

Pfc. Liloia has four sisters, Ann, Ruth, Marie and Dorothy. A brother, SK 3/c Pat Liloia, has been in the Navy two and one half years and is at present on an oil tanker in the South Pacific.

PACIFIC: Lt. James Hare

(Aug.6, 1943) -- 1st Lt. James H. Hare, 27, died of an illness in a Japanese prison camp, his father, Kenneth R. Hare of Hillside Avenue, was notified by the War Department.

A 1st Lt. James H. Hare of the 71st Engineer Battalion, 71st Philippine Division, died Nov. 27, 1942, in the South Pacific.

The last message that Mr. Hare received was a wireless that he was “all right” after the fall of Bataan. A message was received by the father by the American Red Cross that his son was a prisoner of war.

Figures from the War Department are that one out of every 10 American soldiers known to have been captured since the fall of Corrigidor and Bataan has died of disease in Jap prison camps.

Lt. Hare, 27, was a graduate of Wisconsin University, receiving his Chemical Engineering degree in 1940.

He was called into the Army in the same year as a 2nd lieutenant and trained at Fort Belvoir, Va. He chose foreign duty and was sent to the Philippines.

His father is a sales manager for Koppers Company in Kearny and moved to Nutley over a year ago from Chicago, Ill.

A 1st Lt. James H. Hare of the 71st Engineer Battalion, 71st Philippine Division, died Nov.27, 1942, in the South Pacific.

He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

PACIFIC: Lt. John Hanley

(Dec. 8, 1944) - Mrs. John M. Hanley of Race street was advised by the War Department last Friday that her husband, 1st Lt. John Hanley was killed Nov. 21, in the Burma Theatre of Operation.

Mrs. John Michael Hanley of Race Street, said the telegram stated that details of his death had not yet been released.

Mrs. Hanley, the former Mary Bandera of this town, had recently learned that her husband, a lawyer by profession, had just received an assignment in the department of the Provost Marshall General as a defense counselor during court martial proceedings.

Lt. Hanley, 37, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hanley of Jersey City, was married in May 1941 and was inducted shortly afterward on June 12, his 34th birthday.

He trained at Ft. Belvoir, Va., and late in 1942, entered Officer Candidate School, from which he was graduated and received his commission as 2nd lieutenant in 1942.

In July 1943, he was commissioned a 1st lieutenant and left for overseas. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with one Bronze Service Star, an Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII and a World War II Victory pin.

Educated at All Saints Parochial School and Lincoln High School in Jersey City, Lt. Hanley received his law degree from the New Jersey Law School in 1929. He was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1930 and practiced with Joseph F. S. Fitzpatrick, former secretary of state, and John A. Lombardy, in Jersey City. He was a member of the Hudson County Bar association and Jersey City Council 137, Knights of Columbus.

Services were held in All Saints Church, Jersey City.

He is survived by his wife, an industrial nurse w/National Radio Corp. in Newark, his parents, a sister and three brothers.

PACIFIC: Arthur Garrett

U.S. Marines Sergeant Arthur C. Garrett was killed in action on Oct. 8, 1942, at Guadalcanal in the vicinity of Matanika River.

Garrett joined the service on May 5, 1939. His service number is 00271587.
He is the son of Peter W. Garrett of Cedar Street, Nutley.

He was assigned to the USS Barnett, Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands; USS Wakefield at 1st Base Depot, Norfolk, Va.; Parris Island, S.C.; Co I, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines FMF.

Sgt. Garrett was posthumously awarded: Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar with star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; American Defense Service Medal w/brass clasp; and World War II Victory Medal. He also had earned the Marksman Badge w/rifle bar.

PACIFIC: Anthony Di Petta

(Nov. 10, 1944) – Aviation Ordnanceman 1/c Anthony Di Petta was reported missing in action in a fiery plane crash in the South Pacific on Sept. 10.

His plane, together with other aircraft left the carrier on a pre-invasion strike against enemy installations and shipping in the Palau Islands. The attack was made in the face of persistent and accurate anti-aircraft fire.

Mr. and Mrs. Sisto Di Petta of Columbia Avenue, received a letter from his commanding officer, Lt. Commander S. L. Prickett, USN, telling that he was lost in an airplane crash at sea.

The letter follows:

“It was with considerable regret that I had to wire the Bureau of Naval Personnel that your son, Anthony, was missing as a result of an airplane crash at sea.

“Your son was in a plane piloted by Lt. J.R. Manown and took off or Malakai Island in the Palau group. The plane was in excellent shape. Just short of the target, the plane went into a steep dive, entered the water and burst into flames.

“We have listed your son as missing because no trace has been found of the plane or any of the crew. However, it is only fair to you to let you know what we think so that you will not maintain any heart breaking hopes for his survival. Because of the facts of the crash as we know them, we hold out no hopes for his survival.

“Your son was one of the first of the crew to report to his squadron. Since that time he has conducted himself in a manner to reflect pride on his family and on the Naval Service, whose traditions he maintained to the highest degree. Your son is badly missed by both the officers and the men of this squadron.”

Di Petta who has served five years in the Navy was attached to a Torpedo Squadron of the Air Force when he was lost in action.

Di Petta entered the Navy in 1939, taking his boot training at Newport, R. I. His first assignment was as a crewman aboard the USS Wasp. When that ship was torpedoed in September 1942, he spent six hours in a lifeboat in the Coral Sea before being picked up.

PACIFIC: Norman Bell

Private Norman R. Bell, USMC, was killed in action on Iwo Jima on Feb. 20, 1945. Pfc. Bell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bell, Brookline Avenue.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Marines from New York. His service number is 00924143.

Bell was a BAR gunner who joined Able Company as a replacement after the Tinian campaign.

He was killed on the second day of the battle of Iwo Jima as his company performed mop-up duties along the beaches

He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation with one service star, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon. Pvt. Bell is listed on the Honolulu Memorial Honolulu, Hawaii.

(July 23, 1943) -- Petty Officer Thomas Edward Ashton Jr., electrician’s mate 3/c, on submarine duty was reported missing in action April 22, 1943.

The young sailor was known by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ashton Sr., who formerly lived on Cathedral Avenue, to have been aboard the submarine Triton, which was reported by the Navy on July 22 as having been sunk in the Pacific with 11 Jap ships to its credit.

He attended St. Mary's elementary school. He was an assistant scout master of troop 12 at St. Mary's Church.

Tom has been engaged to Miss Olive Shaefer for the past year. He has three sisters, Alice and Melina who live in Nutley, and Mrs. Eileen Rodowsky.

PACIFIC: C. Bruce Dunthorn

(March 3, 1944) - In a telegram received Wednesday from Lt. General A. A. Vandergriff of the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus W. Dunthorn of High Street were informed of the death in action of their son, Pfc. Cecil Bruce Dunthorn, 22, of the celebrated Fifth Marines.

Two days before they had received a letter from Pfc. Jon La Barbera, one of Bruce's buddies telling them of their son's death while on a mission early in February during the invasion of Cape Gloucester, New Guinea.

Lt. Gen. Vandergriff's wire stated that Bruce was "killed in action in the performance of duty and service of his country."

Pfc. La Barbera wrote: "Before he passed away, Bruce asked me to write home for him. I have known Bruce for two years and we've been through thick and thin. When we lost Bruce, we lost the squad. He was undoubtedly the best. Two boys attempted to bring him to safety but did not succeed. One of the boys was wounded, the other was not hurt." When he returned he would be able to tell the story in detail.

Mr. and Mrs. Dunthorn last heard from their son in a letter written Jan. 24, in which he had asked that some toothpaste be sent to him. Earlier, in reply to a letter from his parents in which they had asked what he would like to have for Christmas, he had written that he wanted "only a handful of snow."

Pfc. Dunthorn, who was a sniper scout, had also taken part in most of the battle of Guadalcanal. He had been left behind in New Caledonia because of a broken wrist, but a few days later managed to stow away on a bomber and joined his unit at Guadalcanal.

He entered into the Marines the day after Pearl Harbor, and trained at Parris Island, S.C., and New River, N.C. His unit left New River in May 1942 for New Zealand where they went through an earthquake a day or two after arrival.

After Guadalcanal, Pfc. Dunthorn was evacuated to Brisbane, Australia, going from there to a town near Melbourne for a short rest. He later went to New Guinea for several months duty there.

On Feb. 4, Mr. and Mrs. Dunthorn had received word that their son had been recommended for the Navy V-12 training program in this country.

He is a graduate of Nutley high school.

Lt. David Dinan III, 25, of Hawthorne Avenue, was killed March 17, 1969, in Laos, Southeast Asia, after he was forced to bail out of a F105 jet that had been hit by ground fire.

Lt. Dinan was a pilot from the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Airbase, Thailand.

During the combat mission, Dinan’s aircraft was hit by enemy fire and he ejected. His parachute was shredded when it hit trees, however, and he sustained what were believed to be fatal injuries from falling through the trees and down an embankment.
Dinan was declared killed in action/body not recovered.

After attending St. Mary’s grammar school, where he was in the Drum and Bugle Corps., and participated in Little League baseball, he entered Seton Hall Prep School. At Seton Hall, he wrote for the newspaper and lettered in track. He earned an engineering degree, with a major in physics at MIT and Stevens Institute of Technology. At MIT, Dinan was a member of Phi Kappa Beta Fraternity. He earned his commission in ROTC at Stevens Institute of Technology, where he majored in physics. He joined the Air Force in 1966.

In addition to his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Dinan, he is survived by a brother, Marine Lt. Charles Dinan, a sister Mary, and a brother John.

His fiancée, Lt. Valerie Gallulo, who he was to marry the following month, served in the Women’s Air Force. Stationed in Thailand, she served as an intelligence officer. She wrote to his parents: “David is truly a son to be proud of. I only knew him for nine short months but every moment we had together was a cherished one. He was a man and a gentleman in every sense of the word. No higher compliment could have been paid to my womanhood than when he asked me to be his wife.”

In a July 18, 1968, letter to his brothers, Johnny and Charles, Dinan wrote: “I’m sitting in a little shed on the end of the runway with a pair of binoculars and three radios to keep me company while I sit here and watch (supervise) the flying operations. Mostly it’s just boring as the dickens ‘cause most of the time there isn’t anyone landing or taking off. What I do is check the H105’s to make sure everything is normal before they take off and while they’re landing. Thank God for small favors.

“Things are really getting Mickey-Mouse around here, with a whole bunch of new regulations on what is proper behavior for officers and gentlemen on base – and what is ten times worse – they’re telling us how to fly the airplanes in combat. Of course, I have a tendency to develop a short memory when this nonsense is going on. The way I figure it, if I want to go hang my (tail) out going after a target, that’s my decision, and no one else’s.

“I’ve gotten 8 missions in over the North so far, and I’ve got another one this afternoon. So I guess I’ll have 10 counters or maybe 11 by the time I’ve been here a month. If the war keeps up, I could have my 100 in around the middle of March. On the other hand, if the war ends, I’ll probably have to stay here an extra 6 months past the maximum of one year that they can keep me here in a combat zone.

“… Well, John and Charles, that’s about it for now. I’ve got to go get the good words on the target I’m going to strike this afternoon. Good luck to all of you, Mom, Dad and Mary also.”

Lt. Dinan was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Thunderchief pilot over North Vietnam on July 14, 1968. On that date, Lt. Dinan was a member of a flight diverted from a preplanned mission to support the rescue of a fellow pilot downed in a fiercely defended area of North Vietnam. In a constant barrage of deadly anti-aircraft fire, Lt. Dinan, without thought of his own personal safety, made repeated passes in close proximity to the survivor, successfully silencing the fire and halting the advance of hostile ground forces attempting to capture the downed airman. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lt. Dinan reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

In an Oct. 9, 1968, letter to his parents, Dinan wrote:

“I’m on Okinawa, at Kadena AFB, taking an R&R. I have to go back to Korat either tomorrow or the next day, but I’ve really enjoyed my stay here.

“… As of now I have 43 counters under my belt – almost halfway through. Nothing exciting has happened for the last several times I’ve flown – it’s been a real piece of cake.

Later that month, on Oct. 29, he wrote his parents: “I guess it’s been a sizable time since I wrote. The big reason I didn’t was that I’ve been busy as a beaver since I got back from R&R. We’re short on pilots again, and carrying an increased rate of sorties – so I’ve flown every day but one since I’ve been back. Which makes it kind of rough. I’m always exhausted after I fly – probably half physical and half mental. Also hasn’t been much happening here that’s exciting or interesting.

“… we’ve been saddled with so many restrictions the past couple of months (presumably in an effort to save airplanes) that it’s almost impossible to do an adequate job. I’m sure more stuff gets through now than did a couple of months ago. And, of course, every truckload of stuff we don’t blow up in NVN is a truckload the groundpounders are going to have to face sooner or later.

“… There are really about four different wars going on – three in Laos that you never hear about, and South Vietnam. By the way the rest of this stuff about Laos is supposedly classified – so if you tell anybody, say you read it in Time magazine. They’ve printed most of it.

“Right now we’re flying more missions in Laos than we are in Vietnam. There is a full scale war between the nationalist Lao and Pathet Lao up in northern Laos (Where Dr. Dooley was). The Pathe Lao headquarters is at Sam Neue – and that is always an exciting mission. There are more guns there than anyplace in Pack 1 – or at least they shoot more. The Laotian army desperately needs air support, however, and we provide it. The Air Force calls them “armed reconnaissance” missions – but they are out-and-out raids, and probably the most dangerous we fly.

“I’m in fine shape – just griping more and enjoying it less. And I still can’t spell. I’ve got 53 counters now, and 66 combat missions. A real old pro. But the way, I got my absentee ballot. I just might burn it in effigy. Not too much choice there.

“I have to close now. It’s now 9:30 p.m. – and I have to get up at 0330, I’ll try to write more regularly in the future.”
Lt. Dinan was awarded the Air Medal (Eighth and Ninth Oak Leaf Cluster) for meritorious achievement from Nov. 16, 1968 to Jan. 8, 1968. He was awarded the Air Medal (Tenth Oak Leaf Cluster) for meritorious achievement from Jan. 9 to Feb. 23, 1969.

Lt. Dinan was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Second Oak Leaf Cluster) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on March 17, 1969. On that date, Lt. Dinan’s flight struck a heavily defended, vulnerable interdiction point and troop encampment under marginal weather conditions.

Lt. Dinan was posthumously awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service from July 1, 1968 to March 17, 1969. Lt. Dinan distinguished himself by meritorious service as Assistant Awards and Decorations Officer while assigned to the 469th and 34th Tactical Fighter Squadrons at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand.

Lt. Dinan was awarded the Purple Heart. It is awarded to service personnel who received wounds in action against an armed enemy of the United States during periods of war or armed conflict or who were wounded or lost their lives as a result of action by hostile foreign forces.

Lt. Dinan is among nearly 600 Americans who disappeared in Laos. His remains have not been recovered.

Sgt. Winan Klesick died of pneumonia in France on Oct. 15, 1918.

Private George Kalvio died of pneumonia in France on Oct 24, 1918.

Private RayBlum was killed in action at Grand Pre, France, on October 22, 1918.

Private Ralph Zellars of High Street, died from wounds on Nov. 5, 1918, in France.

Pasquale (Joseph) De Francesco died while in service on Nov. 28, 1918.

William Harrison of the Stevedore Regiment, died of pneumonia in November 1918, at Camp Stuart, Newport News, Va.

Second Lt. Thomas W. Tuttle, Jr., 25, an Air National Guard pilot, was killed in a plane crash in May 1958.

Lt. Frank Paul Jannarone Jr., 25, of High Street, was killed June 12, 1958, when the B-47 bomber he was co-piloting crashed in Vermont.

Staff Sgt. Charles A. Marsh, 45, died July 23, 1958, following a highway accident near Ethan Allen Air Force Base in Burlington, Vt.,

1st Lt. Charles Tillou, 24, of Rutgers Place, was killed in an air crash near Paris in September 1958.

Lt. (j.g.) Edward J. Zuczek (j.g.), 22, was lost when the Navy photo reconnaissance plane on which he was serving as navigator went down in a storm at sea off Guam on October 18, 1958.

Private First Class Michael Patrick Halpin of Brookdale Street was killed in action in Vietnam on Jan. 19, 1967.

Lance Corporal Matthew Dwyer Jr., was killed in Vietnam when his helicopter was shot down Feb. 28, 1968.

Marine Private First Class Richard Greenspan, 21, of Povershon Road, was killed in action in Vietnam on Nov. 10, 1968.

Pfc. Alfred J. Critelli, 24, was killed in action in Vietnam on Dec. 11, 1968.

(Oct. 12, 1918) Private Claude Henry Daw was killed in action September 27. Daw served four years with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces.

His mother, Mrs. Ellen Daw, of Princeton Street, received a telegram telling of her son's death from the Canadian government on Oct. 9.

During the first year of his service Daw was wounded severely once and shell-shocked once.

Daw was a member of the First Battalion First Division Canadian Expeditionary Force and had seen some of the worst fighting of the war during his four years of service.

One of his brothers, Ernest, is a sergeant major in the same battalion, while another brother, Richard C. Daw, is a member of an engineer regiment in the American Army. Both are in France.

He was 32 years old and leaves a wife and four year-old son.

Robert Clendenning Jr.

(Oct. 20, 1944) - 1st Lt. Robert Clendinning of the Army Air Force, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clendinning of 126 High Street has been reported killed in action Sept. 27 over England.

A telegram from the War Department provided no details to his wife Mrs. Bertha Schundler Clendinning. Their daughter Beth is now a year old.

Lt. Robert J. Clendinning, U.S. Air Force, 846th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group Large, received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart. He is buried at Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England, Plot E, Row 6, Grave 2.

John Windheim

(September 21, 1945) - Lt. (jg) John Windheim Jr., U.S. Navy, was killed in an aircraft accident at Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Windheim, of 58 Vreeland avenue, have received no details.

Lt. Windheim was born in Nutley 24 years ago and attended local schools, graduating from Nutley High as an honor student in 1939. He was a member of the high school band. That same year he took his examinations for Annapolis, was named first alternate and on his 19th birthday he was sworn into the office.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Elizabeth.

Richard Bates Jr.

(Sept. 22, 1966) - Marine private Richard Stanley Bates Jr., 19, was killed Saturday in a Viet Cong ambush near Quangtri, Vietnam.

A Marine lieutenant visited both the home of Richard’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard S. Bates of Margaret Ave., and a close aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Newport of Spring Street.

The telegram said simply that Pfc. Bates died on Sept. 17 of multiple fragmentation wounds while engaged in action against hostile forces.

Bates had been involved in two combat missions prior to last week. So severe were the hardships imposed by those two military operations that his unit was sent back to the Philippines for a week’s rest.

C. Lowell Liebau

(Oct. 6, 1944) - Anna Liebau of Franklin avenue was informed by telegram Monday that her son Lt. C. Lowell Liebau, 22, had been killed in action in France on Sept. 16.

Born in Nutley, Oct. 4, 1921, Lowell attended the local schools and was graduated from the high school as president of his class in February 1939.

Besides his mother, he leaves a sister Mrs. Jack Thelin, and his fiancée Miss Joan Pennington, of Carteret place.

(Oct. 6, 1944) - Mrs. Margaret Dickert of 331 Park Avenue was informed by telegram Monday that her husband Pfc. Robert Dickert had been killed in action in France on Sept. 15.

(Nov. 10, 1944) - Mr. and Mrs. Sisto Di Petta of 9 Columbia Avenue, who were informed that their son, Aviation Ordnanceman 1/c Anthony Di Petta, was missing in action, have received a letter from his commanding officer, Lt. Commander S. L. Prickett, USN, telling that he was lost in an airplane crash at sea.

Young Di Petta who has served five years in the Navy was attached to a Torpedo Squadron of the Air Force when he was lost in action.

Nicholas Pucci

Pfc. Nicholas S. Pucci, 18, died, Sept. 6, 1950, in Pusan, Korea.

Pucci, a son of Patrolman and Mrs. James V. Pucci of Woodland Avenue, was killed in action. He is Nutley's first casualty of the Korean War.

Pucci was a member of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division.

Pucci, who left Nutley High School in July 1949, to enlist in the Army, was killed while fighting with a heavy artillery unit of the First Division on the Taegu front.

A telegram from Army authorities announcing his death in action came to the family only a short time after a letter arrived from Korea, dated Aug. 27, asking for cookies and candy to sweeten his Army rations.

Pucci had been stationed briefly in Japan with the First Division before the Korean affair developed.

Pucci is survived by his parents, and two sisters, Mrs. Angelina Policastro and Mrs. Katherine Boston, both of Nutley.

Three months after Pucci's death, the Avondale and Big Tree Boys Club asked the town to help build a memorial in his honor in Father Glotzbach Park.

Charles Tillou

(Sept. 25, 1958) -- Details have reached Nutley of the air accident which cost the life of 1st Lt. Charles Tillou, 24 son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wesley Tillou of Rutgers Place, who was one of six Air Force men known to have been killed in a collision between an American transport plane and a French fighter plane near Paris.

The two planes; an Air Force C139 transport plane and a Mystero Jet, collided at Polsey on Friday with Lt. Tillou's wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Vandenberg, who had joined him in France, first learning of the air tragedy. She returned to this country by an Air Force plane soon after the accident and is now in Nutley.

Tillou was a member of the 41st Troop Carrier Squadron operating out of France.

Memorial services were conducted yesterday afternoon at St. Paul's Congregational Church and Evreux Air Force Base in France.

Lt. Tillou is the second Air Force officer from Nutley to be killed within a period of only three months.

In July, Lt. F. Paul Jannarone Jr., a pilot with the Strategic Air Command, was killed when a B-47 Stratojet bomber crashed into the side of a mountain in Vermont.

Lt. Tillou, a navigator, volunteered for the fatal mission. He was the navigator aboard the American transport plane on a flight from the air base at Evreux, France, to Spangdahlem, Germany.

Lt. Tillou entered the Air Force in January 1957, received his preliminary training at Lackland Air Force Base, in Texas, and received his navigator's wings at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, where he ranked second in the flight school graduating class.

He was sent overseas last April and his wife followed him to France two months later. The couple had been married only 14 months at the time of the fatal air crash.

Lt. Tillou was a life-long resident of Nutley and went through the public school system, having been graduated from Yanticaw elementary, and Nutley junior and senior high schools.

He was one of the most popular students in the Nutley High School class of 1952. Lt. Tillou was outstanding both as a student and as an athlete.

He started at third base on the Maroon baseball team and helped bulwark Nutley to the final round of the 1952 Greater Newark Tournament and Group 4 sectional honors.

Lt. Tillou was honored by being selected for the All-County baseball team and also served as captain of the Nutley basketball team. For his success in sports, Lt. Tillou was singled out by American Legion, Post 70, as the "Scholastic Athlete of the Year" for 1952.

Tillou went on to Colgate University and continued to combine his scholastic and athletic abilities. He was president of his senior class at Colgate, was president of the Senior Honor Society and as selected for "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities".

In sports, Tillou went on to star in soccer, an activity he had never played until going to college. He became one of the best players on the Colgate team and was named fullback on the All-East soccer team.

Lt. Tillou is also survived by a sister, Miss Carolyn Tillou, at home, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Charles W. Tillou. He was also the grandson of the late Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Caldwell and the late Dr. Charles W. Tillou.

He entered the service from New Jersey, and died on July 20, 1944.

Westfall is buried at Plot B, Row 7, Grave 25, Normandy American Cemetery, St. Laurent-sur_Mer, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.

(July 20, 1945) - First Lt. Lothrop F. Ellis, 25, of the Army Air Force, formerly of Mountainview avenue, was killed in a plane crash Tuesday, July 17, three miles from the B-29 Bomber Base at Salina, Kan., where he was radar maintenance officer.

A veteran of 55 missions in the European and Mediterranean theatres, Lt. Ellis, who was with the 15th AAF as a pilot of a P-38 fighter plane, had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with eleven Oak Leaf Clusters.

Lt. Ellis was graduated from Nutley High school and afterward attended Perkiomen school in Pennsylvania. He attended Georgia Tech and enlisted while a student there.

Cpl. Paul Martino

Corporal Paul Salvatore Martino was killed in action on July 15, 1918.

The son of Nicholas Martino of Hancox Ave., had been reported missing in action about six weeks before the War Department confirmed his death.

Young Martino was a corporal in Company F, 38th Infantry. He was 19 years old and worked in the Sonneborn Oil Works at the time he enlisted. Before that he attended the local public schools.

Martino, 20, had reached the rank of corporal. He trained at Fort Dix and Syracuse, N.Y., before going to France last March. Another brother, Joseph, also is in France.

Besides his brother in service, he is survived by his father, step-mother, half-sister and two half-brothers.

Warren P. Marks

(September 3, 1943) -- Midshipman Warren Prime Marks, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Marks of St. Mary's Place, has been killed in action somewhere in the Mediterranean.
Engine cadet Marks and 11 others were killed aboard the Liberty ship Timothy Pickering on July 13, according to the U.S. Merchant Marines.

The vessel was bombed and sunk by aircraft while anchored at Avola, Sicily.

(July 13, 1945) - Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. John Gervan of Myrtle avenue, that their son, 1st Lt. John Gervan, 27, reported missing last July 4, has been officially declared dead.

Lt. Gervan was piloting a P-51 Mustang with the 381st Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter group over St. Lo (France) when he was lost.

In life there are no coincidences.

At a business meeting earlier this month, I met Christopher C. Stout.

In room of more than 80 people, Stout and I sat next to each other.

Stout was to receive an award for Series Writing and Reporting for his work at the Ridgewood News‚ "The Hero Next Door." This series profiled the families of those serving overseas.

Sitting there, chatting, I learned that, earlier, Stout had written a series of articles on the men and women from Ridgewood, N.J., who died while in service.

I expressed my surprise that of all the people he sat next to, he sat next to me.

The compilation of that series and research resulted in his book, AT DEATH HE WAS 25 YEARS OLD, published by King of Spain Press.

His motives for writing the series were similar to the process to mine in compiling the Nutley Sons and Belleville Sons honor rolls. Stout, too, had looked at a war memorial in town and something inside told him to learn the stories behind the names.

Until we struck up a conversation I had only known of one other person, from New Jersey, also, who had done something like this. Robert Caruso's effort resulted in Verona Heroes

As these stories go, Caruso was researching the war dead from Verona and while researching Thurston Woodward who was killed in World War II came across my web site for the sailor whose family later moved to Verona.

Stout and I had a similar conversation that Saturday morning. We spoke of some men who were killed in the war and memorialized in more than one town.

It turned out that Thomas E. Ashton Jr. grew up in Nutley and his family moved to Ridgewood.

The young man's story was in the Nutley Sons Honor Roll and in Stout's book.

Another coincidence turned up concerning the Dec. 24, 1944, torpedoing of the Leopoldville. Nutley's Malcolm Christopher was on the the ship. Also aboard was Ridgewood's Thomas A. Cobb.

Sometimes I find that my sense of loss over the strangers that turn up in my books and these similarly-themed books is overwhelming. I swear to God I don't ever again want to write about the war dead.

And yet. As Stout and I compared notes he mentioned some sources I hadn't tapped. Some sources that might uncover the stories of my guys whose stories have yet to be told.

And I wondered when I might cross check our references and get on with this work, this work that comes from a deep, deep part of the heart.

Memorial Day Parade - Monday, May 28, 11 a.m.

Anyone who has seen the official township press release knows that the parade on Monday steps off at about 11.

What a lot of people in town don't know is that the Veterans Council - which includes the local chapters of national organizations including the American Legion, AMVETS, VFW and other groups - at about 9-ish begin a tour of the Nutley war memorials beginning at the American Legion on Franklin Avenue.

The group tours the more than one-dozen memorials across town with an entourage that ends at the American Revolution memorial in front of the high school, shortly before the parade line up begins.

In addition to marching in this year's parade, if you are so inclined, or standing along the sidelines cheering, this year, gather family and friends and be on hand at one of the memorials when the Vets gather to remember their fallen brethren.

Regarding your web tribute to soldier Burt Hafkin, who died 18 Oct 1951 in Korea, member of the 21st Reg, 24th Infantry Division, which was not on Heartbreak Ridge.

The 24th ID was fighting in Operation Nomad-Polar, east of the Punchbowl/Heartbreak Ridge. They were trying to take Hill 770 and other peaks south of Kumsong the day he was killed. After the Allies broke the enemy in the Iron Triangle earlier in the summer, the Chinese had shifted their main operations eastward to Kumsong, which became one of the Chinese' main supply routes. Operation Nomad, although overlooked by most historians, was a brutal battle lasting from 13 - 22 October 1951. The daily average casualty rate was higher than either Heartbreak or Bloody Ridge.

Because Heartbreak was much in the news -- and overlapped Operation Nomad by two days -- it was a common mistake for newspapers to report casualties of Nomad as being part of Heartbreak Ridge, which was carried out primarily by the 2nd Infantry Division.

Thirty-ninth Regiment - Infantry - Volunteers.

The Thirty-ninth Regiment was organized under the provisions of an Act of Congress, approved July 22, 1861, and an Act of Congress, approved July 4, 1864, as set forth in General Orders No. 224, dated War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., July 6, 1864, and under authority received from the War Department for the raising of two regiments of Infantry, and promulgated in General Orders No. 4, dated Office of Adjutant General, Trenton, N. J., August 24, 1864.

The Regiment was organized under the provisions of General Orders No. 110, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., April 29, 1863. Instructions were issued and recruiting for the Regiment immediately commenced. The Headquarters of the Regiment was established at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, N. J., and active measures were put forth to complete the organization at an early day.

The required number of men to complete the Regiment was soon raised and mustered into the service of the United States, by companies, for one year.

Company A was mustered in October 11; Company B, September 30; Company C, October 8; Company D, October 3; Company E, September 23; Company F, September 25; Company G, September 23; Company H, September 26; Company I, October 1; Company K, September 23, 1864, at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, N.J., by William O. Douglass, Second Lieutenant, Fourteenth Infantry, United States Army.

Soon after the commencement of this regiment, authority was issued for the raising of another regiment of Infantry, to be known as the Forty-first, recruiting being dull it failed of success - the men that had been enlisted for it were transferred to and joined this regiment.

The Regiment was fully completed and organized by the 11th day of October, 1864, having a full complement of men. Officers, 39; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 973. Total, 1012.

It left the State by detachments. Companies E, F, G, H, and K, left October 4, 1864, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel James H. Close; Company D, left October 9th, under the command of Captain Fowler Merrill; Companies B and I, left October 10th, under the command of Major William T. Cornish, and Companies A, C, and Field and Staff, left October 14, 1864, under the command of Colonel Abram C. Wildrick, and proceeded under orders direct to the front. Arriving at City Point, Va., it was temporarily assigned to duty with General Benham's Brigade of Engineers, within the fortifications around Petersburg.

It remained in this connection but a short time; when it was assigned to the Ninth Army Corps. During the months of March and April, 1865, the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, N. J., of a large number of recruits.

The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, and those not entitled to discharge under the provisions of General Orders No. 77, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., April 28, 1865, were transferred to the Thirty-third Regiment, in compliance with Special Orders No. 45, dated Headquarters, Ninth Army Corps, June 15, 1865, and were discharged with that regiment.

The remainder were mustered out of service near Alexandria, Va., June 17, 1865, under provisions of special orders from War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., dated May 18, 1865, by Edward Rose, First Lieutenant Fifty-sixth Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteers, Assistant Commissary of Musters, Second Division, Ninth Army Corps.

The Regiment was first attached to General Benham's Brigade of Engineers, Army of the James - then to the First Brigade, Second Division, Ninth Army Corps.

The Regiment took part in the following engagements: Before Petersburg, Va., (Capture of Fort Mahone), April 2, 1865.

We recently learned that Dorr Field, Arcadia, Fla., was named after Nutley WWI pilot Stephen H. Dorr Jr.

According to Florida Aviation and Southwest Florida - 1910 to 1996:

Near Arcadia, Carlstrom Field and Dorr Field were principal aviation training stations for the Army. At Dorr Field fourteen hangars were constructed and training was done in Curtiss JN-4D (Jenny) airplanes as well as some rotary engine craft produced by the Glenn Martin company. Army airfields were named after military aviation heroes of the day, and Carlstrom Field was named after First Lieutenant Victor Carlstrom who had made many altitude and distance records and died in a training flight.

Dorr Field ... was reopened in 1942 by John Riddle and operated as a civilian contract school for training Army aviators. At it's peak it had 700 cadets in training using Steerman training planes. Riddle also operated schools at Clewiston. In 1944 the Embry-Riddle interests were sold to John McKay. After the war, the field was converted to a minimum security prison.

Stephen Higginson Dorr Jr., 24, was killed in an airplane collision in Toronto on Aug. 18, 1917. The eldest son of Stephen H. Dorr of Satterthwaite Avenue, he had lived in Nutley all his life.

Dorr joined the Officers’ Reserve Corps at Fort Myer, Fla., ago and was one of ten men selected to go to Toronto for training in aviation with the Royal Flying Corps there.

According to the Toronto Globe, Aug. 18:

S. H. Dorr, an American cadet training with the Royal Flying Corps., was killed yesterday in an accident at Armour’s Heights.

It was Dorr’s first solo flight, and also the first solo flight of another cadet, an American, G. Squires.

In some manner the planes collided in the air, Dorr’s falling to the ground, and bursting into flames as soon as it struck the earth.

Bystanders extricated him from the machine, but not until he had been severely burned. He died a few minutes later.

The other aviator made his landing without mishap, but naturally his nerves were rather shaken.

NUTLEY FLYBOYS PAID HIGH PRICE IN WW I

Stuart Edgar and James Pearson are two of the men whose stories that come to mind when Lafayette Escadrille discussing Nutley's part in the air war over France during World War I.

The new movie "Flyboys" about the Lafayette Escadrille brings all the action and tragedy of those early flying days to the local cinema. But Nutley men held there own in that war 90 years ago.

Lt. Stuart Emmet Edgar served in the the Lafayette Escadrille. The young flyer was killed in a starting accident as he was starting out for patrol duty on Aug. 17, 1918.
Lt. Edgar, 28, worked and for a short time worked for the (Nutley) Sun. Later he was on the staff of the Newark News and the New York Evening Sun.

Born in Nutley, Edgar attended the Newark Academy and the Riverview Military Academy at Peekskill, N.Y., where he was a member of the football and baseball teams.

He later went to Cornell, where he was active in athletics and was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity and the Undine Sophomore Society.

In October 1916, Edgar joined the Norton-Harjes ambulance unit and went to France as an ambulance driver.

Later he went into the French aviation service, receiving his training a the Avord Flying School and later at Pau. When America entered the war he was transferred to the United States air service.

Lt. Edgar earlier wrote to his mother that he had been engaged in his first air fight from which he emerged unhurt. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #493, 272 Washington Avenue, is named in his honor.

Meanwhile, Capt. James W. Pearson of Nutley received his commission in the Royal Flying Corps in November 1917.

He was assigned to the RFC's 23rd Squadron and downed his first enemy plane on May 30, 1918.

He received credit for the conquest of a German fighter in both June and July, and his two victories in August qualified him as an "ace."

Over the next two months he raised his total victory count to eight and on Nov. 1, 1918, ten days before the Armistice, he won his last aerial battle.
